Pesky Canvas Snaps

You know how hard it is to undo or resnap canvases after they have been sitting for awhile. One of our clients suggests that applying a light coat of Chap Stik on the snaps solves that problem for a season. Try it and let us know.

Philbrook’s recently fabricated an exotic stainless steel mast in their metal fabrication shop. The mast is going on an 87 ft. Johnson motor yacht. The mast will house 2 radar antennas, Satellite TV antennas, SSb antenna, VHF antennas, Flair camera, loud hailers and horns. The mast was designed by Greg Marshall naval architects, the owner and Philbrook’s own Jamie Hansen. Philbrook’s will be doing the complete installation of the mast and all electronics. Spring Newsletter

Do It Early

It’s May. The sun is shining, the seas are calm. Let’s go boating. Wait a minute. I haven’t had the boat serviced. I should have taken advantage of Philbrook’s early spring offer and I could be on my way. There is always a quiet time in March and early April when all your work can be completed and the boat ready for summer cruising. Remember Drew, Charlie, Jamie, and Brett have sharp pencils at this time of year.

Employee Profile

This edition we feature the whole darn crew. You will recognize a lot of familiar faces. They represent Philbrook’s commitment to keep talented people in our organization to assure you get the quality service and workmanship you have come to expect. There are also some new young faces ensuring fresh thinking and vitality in the workplace. Philbrook’s is also a major supporter of the Quadrant Marine Institute where some of our young employees are taking the marine service technician course. Two of our electricians and a mechanic just returned from manufacturers’ course on Northern Lights generators and Lugger diesels.

Boat Shows

The 2012 Seattle and Vancouver Boat Shows are now complete. We hope you found some new products which will enhance your boating experience.
There were a few items that caught our eye:
Electronics are still changing at breakneck speed. Monitors to keep track of any systems that you can think of and a few you didn’t even know you had. Plus they can all be tied into your home computer or iPad. Touch screens are now being offered by the major manufacturers implying acceptance of this operator-interface in high quality equipment.

LED lighting is now more than a fad and all the early problems appear to have been resolved. We anticipate a significant number of boat owners to upgrade to this new(ish) technology. The lower amperage draws can dramatically enhance quiet time at anchor and the joy of replacing those little halogen bulbs are a thing of the past.

Lithium ion batteries are now being offered to the boat industry. We are installing a set in a client’s boat this March and we look forward to monitoring the short and long-term results.

A notable trend among smaller fishing boats was the switch to aluminum.

Small but important changes to VHF antennas making them easier to install and giving them a longer life.

The most important trend at both boat shows was an upbeat positive attitude coming from both show goers and vendors. Boats and products were sold with many vendors expressing that these were the best shows in recent years.

Yard Projects

BRANTA II

We are currently upgrading this 42 ft Monk which has had the same owner for over 20 years. This year we are installing new teak decks, stripping and recoating the bottom and adding new seating on the command bridge.

87 FT. JOHNSON MOTORYACHT

We are fabricating and installing a very sophisticated stainless and aluminum mast which has multi functions. The design was a collaboration of Greg Marshall Marine architects, the owner’s representative and our own Jamie Hansen.

Help!

We need your input for our next newsletter. We are upgrading our upcoast marina and restaurant guide. If you have a favourite spot let us know. We may even award prizes for your suggestions.

Sidney has new deputy fire chief

Brett Mikkelsen has been appointed the new deputy fire chief for the town of Sidney. Brett has been an important cog at Philbrooks for the last 21 years starting off as a detailer in his early years and progressing to become one of our most valued project managers. We at Philbrooks will miss his youthful energy and his vast knowledge of boats and marine systems. Sidney’s gain will be Philbrooks loss. Good luck Brett. The Philbrooks crew.
